Home Stool in Lampblack
The Home Stool in Lampbalck is a limited edition of 3
The home stool is a quiet object, it is unassuming and something easy. It works, it is a working object, it can be a table when it needs to be. It’s stable but movable, just like the feeling of home. It’s the extra seat at the table for the unexpected guest at dinner. It’s the single step ladder or the mountain top for the inventing child. It’s there to take your weight and does not complain when you favour the armchair.
This stool is here to help you see that the space around it is home.
The design of home stool takes inspiration from forms described by artist JB Blunk.
His works sculpted in redwood, ceramic and stone - his jewellery in ivory, gold and brass and his drawings in ink and acrylic all use forms that seem to embrace each other with soft kisses, one element meets another in a flow of material. Like a tailor whose needle effortlessly welds the fabric, his magic is in balancing negative forms with the weight of the individual.
Collected from the inside of oil lamp mantles, or the burning of tar or pine pitch the use of lampblack in ink could date back to China as early as the 3rd Millennium BC.
On the Lampblack Home Stool i’ve used a Chinese calligraphy ink to colour the surface. There is a depth to the blackness of this ink which both invites you to the grain of the wood and teaches you something of the permanence of the written character.
Each stool is made by hand from solid ash wood at my South East London studio.
10% of every stool purchased donated to The Magpie Project, Supporting mums and under-fives in temporary accommodation in Newham, London.
The stool is made to order, so please allow between 14 to 21 days between making an purchasing and shipping.
The timber is from sourced from a trusted timber merchant with certificates from both The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), to ensure the wood is sustainably and ethically sourced.
